Al Frueh (1880-1968) was a well-known cartoonist and caricaturist, noted primarily for his spare less-is-more approach to cartooning. Frueh did a series of large folio theater caricatures, which remain in demand today. He was also a longtime contributor to the New Yorker, starting off with two cartoons in the very first issue of the magazine. Frueh drew the cover for the second issue of the New Yorker, and contributed work to the magazine throughout his long life.
Al Frueh also contributed work to Art Youngs famous publication, Good Morning, which ran from only May 1919 to October 1921. The magazine was an alternative venue to the Masses, which was silenced by the government due to its opposition to the war. Im quite pleased to offer a very rare Frueh cartoon from the June 5, 1919 issue of Good Morning, only the fifth issue. The piece is titled, Society Note From Odessa, and is captioned, The brilliant and polished Baroness Pugnosy has decided not to confine her well-known talents to her own set this summer, and is pictured working on the nails of some of her comrades. This near 6x 7 cartoon is in Fine condition, with only a light/slight crease at the lower left, entering into the image area approximately an inch. I cannot stress enough just how rare artwork like this is. Original artwork from Youngs Good Morning is akin to hens teeth, and Ive seen only one more by Frueh in all of my years of collecting. If youre a fan of Lefty cartooning, along with Fruehs work, this is a great deal. $250.00 + 7.50 Priority shipping.
