Gluyas Williams (1888-1982) was one of the greatest of the fine line cartoonists, and a mainstay in the New Yorker magazine. Williams also had his own panel cartoon, which ran from 1922 to 1947 under different titles. The cartoon featured Williams observations on daily suburban life, and ran in hundreds of newspapers. Im quite pleased to be able to offer the earliest Gluyas Williams original drawing that Ive ever seen. This piece pictures Broadway star Holbrook Blinn, and is marked on the back as Blinn starring in The Challenge. The Challenge ran on Broadway from August to October, 1919, with a total of 72 performances. This spare drawing by Williams is reminiscent of Al Fruehs work. Freuh was most well known for his wonderfully spare caricatures, including many Broadway stars. The Williams drawing measures 14x 11, and was executed on heavy illustration paper/board. The artwork was obviously matted at one point, and you can see some light toning over the figure of Blinn. This is early and rare stuff by Williams, with a glimpse of what was to come. $150.00 + 12.00 Priority shipping.
