Carey Orr (1890-1967) was a longtime (46 years!) editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune. Orr almost didnt make it into cartooning, as he was a semi-professional baseball player (pitcher) in his youth. He eventually used his earnings from baseball to take cartooning classes at the famed Chicago Academy of Fine Art, and joined the staff of the Trib in 1917. In addition to his editorial cartoons, Orr drew a daily comic strip, Kernal Cootie, for nearly three years, from 1919 to 1922. Im offering a fine example of that strip, from August 21, 1921, albeit half of a full strip. Ive added a picture of the full published strip here, so that you can see the context of this piece. The last panel is worth the price of admission, as it displays Orrs fine figure skills, as well as that sweet, sweet contour line of his. The artwork is signed and inscribed in that last panel. Measuring 7x 11, the piece is in solid VG+ condition. It looks like it may have been gently rolled at some point, maybe for shipping, but lays perfectly flat. It comes from Art Woods fabled collection, and even has some of Arts distinctive writing on the back. $60.00 + 8.00 Priority shipping.
